Mario or Jerry Maguire?

First Google in the US topped the list in Fortune’s list of top 100 workplaces. Only a few steps behind has been Google Australia, who have come first in a similar list based on a survey by Aussie magazine, BRW.

But even even the best workplaces occasionally have troubles with retaining staff. This week’s biggest hero award possibly goes to a games producer who on Wednesday, quit his job via a Mario styled game that he had created. Unlike many of the humorous videos, images, and stories of people quitting their jobs that circulate online, there is no malice intended with this game with the creator moving on to pursue indie game development. The game even ends with great sentiment, saying ‘GO TEAM!’.

Cheap travel

Travel is certainly on my mind today. I spent some time yesterday with a friend in the throws of planning for a year in America, who, for months has been keeping a very close eye on her spending. Another day and another discussion about travel - this time with the destination of Mexico, and a friend who can’t afford to (and is looking forward to the trip so much that she won’t) change her tickets a)to go to a conference that she didn’t realise starts on the day she leaves, and b)because of the much more serious threat of swine flu.

anti-social networking

From MX, to news.com…the news media were filled last week with stories of the world’s first Twitter millionaire. And with the celebrity push set to double the amount of twitter traffic, the imperitive to ‘follow’ is on the rise.

In today’s world, sentences like ‘Are you following Ashton Kutcher?’ ‘I’ll friend you’, or the MySpace based insult, ‘Tom’s your only friend’ have made their way into the lexicon of the western world.

But how connected are we?

Putting your nose back to the grindstone

Have you ever gone away for a few days, and just as you start to relax, it’s time to pack up and head back to work and you feel like you need another holiday to get over the one you’ve just had?

With the Easter weekend barely over, and many workers still befuddled by too much chocolate and seafood (yes, marking the end of Lent, Easter certainly is the holiday for the indulgent) I’m sure that there are many people feeling this way today, especially as the afternoon count down begins.
