What can Twitter teach?

The first thing I did this morning was turn on the radio just in time to catch the news. (Sadly) the second thing was to search ‘Michael Jackson’ on Twitter. Even half asleep I had known that the news would be making Twitter tidal waves. And something that shocked me - I was more willing to trust Twitter, than I was our national broadcaster.

A minute after the first search results appeared, my browser informed me that a further 4500+ Tweets had been published featuring the words ‘Michael Jackson’. Thats about 75 Tweets per second farewelling the King of Pop.

The Networking Wave

Last week Google launched an amazing communication tool called “Wave”. The API is set to change the entire scenario of Email and Instant Messaging. The launch video is about 1hr and 20 mins but the product was tempting enough to hold me for a very long time. The most surprising factor was to see Stephanie Hannon - The product manager/co-presenter at the developer conference during the launch of Google Wave.

I am a regular at the ZaaBiz Networking events. At one such event last year I happen to meet Stephanie the guest speaker for the meet. She not only talked about her experience at Google but also discussed how passionate is the entire Google Team in Australia. It is fun to meet such professionals at the networking events and that is what I feel is the real advantage of networking.

May is Autism Month

According to Richard Barrett of The Values Centre there are seven levels of organisational conciousness. Survival, Relationship, Self-Esteem, Transformation, Internal Cohesion, Making a Difference and Service. One organisation whose aim is overwhelmingly one of service is ASPECT.
ASPECT, or Autism Spectrum Australia, is the country’s largest autism specific non-for-profit service provider. They aim to overcome the isolation of autism through education, information and other services, for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, their families and communities.

Staying connected with your university alumni

Are you part of your university’s alumni?

Currently I’m still a student studying but I wonder once I graduate in 2010 how useful it will be to join the University of Technology alumni. I’ve asked a few friends who have graduated whether they still remain in contact with their old university. I found that the majority of them are part of their alumni and keep in contact with them via monthly e-newsletters and an occasional six month newsletter sent to them in the mail.

So what benefit do you get in keeping ties with your alumni?

anti-social networking

From MX, to news.com…the news media were filled last week with stories of the world’s first Twitter millionaire. And with the celebrity push set to double the amount of twitter traffic, the imperitive to ‘follow’ is on the rise.

In today’s world, sentences like ‘Are you following Ashton Kutcher?’ ‘I’ll friend you’, or the MySpace based insult, ‘Tom’s your only friend’ have made their way into the lexicon of the western world.

But how connected are we?
