Who’s Got It Right?

Experts are telling us the economic slowdown has meant consumers are less likely to spend on items or services they don’t need… So is travel something we’re cutting back on?

Recent fears over swine flu have definitely restricted travel to Mexico, but then again that’s a health concern not an economic issue. Some experts believe travel isn’t being cut back on, but that consumers simply prefer making shorter trips more frequently. Apparently we are no longer focused on the brand we travel with but rather our destinations, and the market should be changing to suit this new trend.

Cheap travel

Travel is certainly on my mind today. I spent some time yesterday with a friend in the throws of planning for a year in America, who, for months has been keeping a very close eye on her spending. Another day and another discussion about travel - this time with the destination of Mexico, and a friend who can’t afford to (and is looking forward to the trip so much that she won’t) change her tickets a)to go to a conference that she didn’t realise starts on the day she leaves, and b)because of the much more serious threat of swine flu.

Can’t be that bad in Australia - planes full - shopping in Melbourne

On both flights, from Sydney to Melbourne and back, the planes were completely full.
