Dry times

Much of NSW is in drought

After a hot January with little rain and lots of sun, two thirds of NSW have been (once again) drought declared.

Yet, we are still better off than we have been in the past few years, and despite the harsh sun effecting some food crops, there has not been enough of an effect to dramatically slow New South Wales’ food production.

When the drought was it its worst, about one in five Australian farmers faced major financial issues, having to pawn or sell something because of lack of money. Non-agricultural workers in these areas did not suffer to the same extent, although wages did decrease.

Irrespective of drought, farmers have always been a demographic prone to high levels of financial stress, due to the high input nature of the industry.

If the farming community has learnt anything from extended years of drought, it is the importance of rallying together and staying connected. The simple action of discussing farming and financial issues has helped many farmers stay afloat (mentally, if nothing else) in the last few years.

As businesses begin to feel the strain of the financial crisis, it is important to look at how industries have survived in times of financial strain. One thing that has been reinforced by recent hardships is the importance of a strong network around you for advice, for help, to form a strong allegiance, or just to discuss the latest news and events.

Signing off,

Louise.
