Journalism - from Australia to Mumbai

Last night the Australian media celebrated its most important annual event. We would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2008 Walkley Awards, the Australian awards for excellence in journalism, print, television, radio, photographic and online media.

Inaugurated in 1956, these awards set the bar for Australian news coverage, and the prestigious gold Walkley is the pinnacle of journalistic achievement in Australia.

Breaking away from traditional journalism is the news that most of our contact with the devastation in Mumbai has come from citizen journalists. Not only are the Australian news networks relying on their ‘on-the-ground’ contacts, travellers and ex-pats living in Mumbai, but also the first blog posts regarding the attacks came hours before any television coverage.
Blogging and social networking sites acted as news hubs as the situation unfurled. Because of the wide-spread nature of the attacks, it was hard to develop a strategic media response. But people were not left without information, due to the proliferation of online mobile technologies.
As I posted yesterday, the thoughts of all us here at ZaaBiz are with those members in Mumbai, and those with family and friends in the city.

Singing off,

Louise.
