Understanding different cultures makes you more employable
It was a great start into this year’s networking events season. Sandra Lie and the Infusion team have chosen a new venue within a business centre in Sydney’s CBD and it proved to be the right decision.

Rebecca Wells and Organiser Sandra Lie
Our speaker Rebecca Wells gave a very lively insight into her training methods, talking about cross cultural coaching. Rebecca’s business Clear Horizon Coaching looks after individual clients as well as larger corporates in Sydney. Cross-cultural dimensions come into play in many of our social and business dealings. Raising awareness of our differences is the first step towards achieving effective cross-cultural communication.
Effective networking helps you take this first step in particular with such a great crowd as last night, with many Chinese, Singaporian, English, Dutch, German and yes: Australian networkers about.
Rebecca explained various ways to look at cultures and cross cultural behaviour, all these centering around two main factors: individual and national cultures. The networking crowd learned about French parking habits (perceived by herself with her English background), ‘Angela the avocado’ helped us segment our perception and we all were taught in the differences of cultures when it comes to belief, values or behaviour.
The networking part of the night was another highlight as about 50 percent of the networkers were all new to our networking event. Plenty of opportunities to make use of our lessons learned about verbal and non-verbal communication and body language.

I agree, Michael, the venue is an improvement. It was great to see so many new people there.
Funnily enough, unlike Rebecca, when I went to Paris, I thought people were incredibly good parkers. And for the same reason: they could get into the tiniest spaces!
Looking forward to more Infusion events in the new space.
PS I wonder who ate Angela the Avocado in the end?
